This seemingly childish poem is quite a theological statement. In the symbolic tradition of Christianity Peter represents the Rock of Faith and Paul represents the Sword of Reason. A balanced faith needs reason as much as a balanced reason needs faith. But that is not the same as granting them equality. If faith flies away reason is as well off following it and thereâ€™s no point to returning until the faith nestles back within your being.

There are many today who believe in the triumph of reason over all other human capacities. We have plenty to be proud of. We have developed and invented quite impressive things in the last hundred years. Telecommunication and easy travel are two of our successes. We have made great strides in world health and education. Even global politics are relatively stable. However, we have also developed the ability to obliterate every living being on the planet. We have devised wicked economic systems rooted in colonialism and oppressive of the poor. Global ethics are poorly developed and the reason for that is that faith is at bay.

In non-confessional schools students are expected to take a course in ethics. This is normally based on the moral teachings of Christ but lack acknowledgment of their source. The liberal thought of the west draws heavily on the Judeo-Christian view of the world and of the people within in. The Book of Genesis is the first green bible. Humanity is declared as steward of creation and sent forth to care for the earth. But the ethics of environmentalism draw deeper on Christian thought than simply by echoing them.

The idea that we have a duty to care for the earth is nonsensical in the wider context of a faithless culture. In an economic system based on shameless consumption and gratification of the self there is no justification for telling people that they must care for the earth. After all, the obligation to our neighbour is neither natural to us nor compatible with the way we live our lives. We have little regard for the lives of strangers and only extend consideration to friends and family. Global obligation has no justification outside of faith other than concern for our natural offspring.

As soon as you build a world-view you are forming a new religion. It might not involve a God but it will have a guiding principle that is the guarantor of constancy and goodness. In the absence of this there is no freedom of flight. The Hebrew commandments numbers three to seven still form the basis of every ethical code. Christ simplified it to loving God and loving our neighbours but, both Jews and Christians draw their ethics from derived eternal truths as they experienced them.

Every human being, regardless of sex, colour, sexuality, faith, size or age dislikes certain things equally. We all hate to be deceived, betrayed, attacked, ridiculed or cheated. We see high principles in love and society â€" we know there are common cords that bind us together even though we know we cannot see them and often know that we disregard them. (People of faith call that sin!)

All of us have some faith â€" maybe we should be reasonable and stop denying that â€" â€œcome back Peter, come back Paul!â€

On November 4th, 2008 Proposition 8 passed, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

In the wake of the defeat, there has been a groundswell of initiative from within the community at a grassroots level. Seizing this opportunity, new political and protest organizations are forming almost daily. The NOH8 Campaign is a photo project & silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8..

The campaign started with portraits of everyday Californians who support Marriage Equality and soon rose to celebrities, military personnel, brothers & sisters, law enforcement, lesbian mothers, directors, politicians, newlyweds, and more. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths symbolizing their voices not being heard and NOH8 painted on one cheek in protest.
