Question by ladybinks: How "adult" can young adult/teen novels be concerning sex scenes and cussing?

I plan on writing a coming of age/romance story which I want to gear for the young adult/teen genre. I want to know how explicit sex scenes can be and how many swear words are generally okay in YA lit. Thanks for any feedback!

Young adult novels (of the Gossip Girl/ A-list type) use the f word maybe 20 times at most. It shouldn't be on virtually every page, but it is by no means absent. All other words like sh** are ok to use a good bit. Damn and hell are abundant. I would draw the line at cu**. That's generally not used ever.

As for sex scenes, don't be very explicit. Usually if the characters have sex it shows like the stuff leading up to the scene and then there's a page break and it skips to afterwards.

Basically, use swear words somewhat sparingly and only have one to two somewhat explicit sex scenes.

However, if you have like a seriously brilliant idea then don't waste it on a typical teen book-- I think you should go ahead and try to write a MAJOR young adult best seller (like of the Twilight type), and I'd recommend using less explicit details/ swearing and having more of a story line because those are the kinds of books parents end up reading too, and parents won't like to see too much inappropriate stuff.
